Call of Duty 3

by Robyn Tippins on July 4th, 2006

I just got a look at some new screenshots of Call of Duty 3 (no I can’t post them yet) and it’s really beautiful. I know you expected to hear that, but I just had to say it. The difference, in shading and textures, from Call of Duty 2 is amazing.

Considering Call of Duty 2 was the highest selling XBox 360 game of 2005 (75% of 360 purchasers bought Call of Duty 2), Call of Duty 3 should be a best seller. But, why you say?

The look
War is ugly, and we remember that particularly today on July 4, but Call of Duty is truly beautiful. The faces, the windows (no longer boarded up, but now letting in the outdoors), the landscapes, the weapons are all multitextured and amply shaded to create a much more realistic look.

The play
With more intelligent AI (they react to the environment, rather than go with the script), a wind overlay (think smoke grenade action) and more destructible cover, you’ll have a blast, literally, playing this game.

Of course, now the live player is a little different. Both the PS3 and the 360 will have similar experiences and your player max is now 24, rather than 8. In essence, you’ve got your own little squad to anihilate the other team. Much more realistic and challenging.

Specifically interesting though, is the ability to really become a squad with real roles. In other words, when you skip past the lobby, you’ll be asked to choose your team, your role (scout can call down artillary), your weapon, etc. and then you’ll gain points and rise in rank by how well you do with your role. Look for online leaderboards with the top sniper, top gunner, etc. listed (woot, bragging rights).

And, you’ll have a chance to battle for strategic areas (ala the singleplayer campaign but with real players) and you’ll have the vehicles from the game with which to squash your enemies. War is hell, but smashing Justin with a Sherman tank will be a pleasure…

2 opinions for Call of Duty 3

Hehe. I posted about this one too. Though mine was far less nicer than yours. As a game, I grant that it’s probably pretty good. Great graphics, great action, great roles to play. I just feel that the WWII horse is getting a bit tired and needs to be put down. Sadly I don’t think I’m in the majority.

Argh! WWII dead? Perish the thought. Call of Duty II is probably my latest fav game, due to online play.

I will forgive your FPS ranting (hardy har) as I am in a minority as well. I love Halo yet I am yearning to see the series end with finality.
