Google Eyes Video Games

Google, an industry leader in everything advertising, has been expanding its offering in recent months including the long awaited debut of Google’s Audio Ads program. Now it appears Google will be venturing into game advertising.

In-game advertising involves advertising being directly inserted into web-connection games.  This is the next logical step for Google and for the web-based  gaming industry since this is largely a smaller based company operation right now. To get a head start in the new media Google is looking at acquiring AdScape Media which is an already established company in the industry.

This series of moves follows Microsoft’s purchase last year of Massive, another in-game advertising company. The highly specific form of advertising may allow Google to charge a higher price for the spots since they will hit such a specific demographic. Problems, however, may arise when gamers have to watch the ads to get to the game they already paid for so expect some backlash from the gaming community.
