Sony Adds To PS3’s Online Capabilites

by Kris on March 7th, 2007

The New York Times has published a report that Sony will announce new online capabilities “meant to draw gamers into Sony’s cyberspace community and allow them to share entertainment content they have created, à la YouTube.”

The main component of this announcement will be a completely new service called PlayStation Home that is slated to debut this fall. The identity on the new service will transfer between different games and will allow users to earn rewards for the progression through a game. It is similar to services already offered by Nintendo and Microsoft but is expected to add even more functionality to the service likely to spur their competitors to do the same.

The announcement will be made later today at the Game Developers Conference which we discussed previously. Microsoft’s major announcement, if you could even call it that, was a $10,000 competition for a new game for its Xbox Live service. Keep an eye on this announcement to see if this quells critics who feel the cost of the PS3 is just too high to warrant everyday gamers adopting it into their playing habits.
