10 Most Important Video Games Ever

As per the US Library of Congress’ request a group composing of Warren Spector, Steve Meretzky, Henry Lowood, Matteo Bittanti, and Joystiq’s Christopher Grant were to choose the 10 most important video games of all time, likely for protection by the Library of Congress much like influential films are protected. Here is the list of chosen games:

  • Spacewar! (1962)
  • Star Raiders (1979)
  • Zork (1980)
  • Tetris (1985)
  • SimCity (1989)
  • Super Mario Bros. 3 (1990)
  • Civilization I/II (1991)
  • Doom (1993)
  • Warcraft series (beginning 1994)
  • Sensible World of Soccer (1994)

These are likely the first of what will become an annual selection of influential games to join the rank. Games were chosen based on their influence into a particular genre and/or they marked the beginning of a particular form of gaming.

What do you think of the list? Like it? Think it’s a good start? What would you have picked as the 10 most influential games worthy of protection by the US government?

As has been mentioned elsewhere, the absence of either Pong, Pacman or Ms. Pacman seems conspicuous. These are titles that brought the video game into the home.
