PSP “Slim” Details Released
The PSP will likely be getting a redesign (not quite a complete overhaul) and Kotaku has the details. The 1.x is something I thought up but this is not a PSP 2 but is instead a redesign of the original PSP. Similar to how the DS was redesigned into the much more successful DS Lite, Sony too is hoping a redesign boosts the system’s sales. Here are the notable changes the handheld will likely undergo:
- New LCD screen will have better image quality but allow for a slimmer design
- Faster UMD drive to improve load times
- 8GB internal memory
- Improved D-pad
- Possibility for a camera although it will likely not make the cut
- Possible change in finish although the color will remain black
- Sub-$170 price tag
The product will be unveiled at e3 in several weeks. The report also suggests that a touch screen will likely be included in Sony’s next handheld system.

A redesign is about time. I can’t say I’ll buy a PSP though, I’m quite happy with my DS, thank you. If the PSP overtakes the DS in the number of fantastic games available, I’ll buy this new PSP.
Is that going to happen? I don’t think so. If it does, well great. I really will do that. I’m not holding my breath though.
