Irrational takes on the 2k name

by Kiven on August 11th, 2007

Irrational Games has announced on the eve of Bioshock’s release that it will change the names of its development studios to 2K Boston and 2K Australia. Irrational, responsible for cult favorite System Shock 2 and Tribes: Vengeance, was purchased by 2K Games way back in 2006 and has since been developing BioShock out of its Boston and Canberra, Australia offices.

“Irrational Games is widely recognized as one of the most innovative development studios in the world,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. “Following their incredible efforts in bringing BioShock to life, we are proud to make the newly renamed Irrational Games studios a cornerstone of our game development family.” Irrational head Ken Levine, now president and creative director of 2K Boston, said: “We’re proud to be part of the 2K Games family and enjoy the new opportunities and artistic freedoms this strengthened relationship provides.”

2K Games is a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive, which also owns Rockstar Games, 2K Sports and Global Star Software. BioShock is scheduled for an Aug. 21 release on PC and Xbox 360 in North America and an Aug. 24 release date in Europe.
