EA says Gaming Industry needs more Women

The head of EA’s European talent acquisition thinks the video game industry needs women. Real women who will be working in the industry, mind you. Speaking at Education Summit at Siggraph, EA’s Matthew Jeffery says that the gaming industry’s image as being a haven for “young, geeky, socially inept men” doesn’t do much to attract new blood and expand the talent pool. Jeffery went on to say that there were two particular areas of game development in which he felt women would excel and be especially helpful:
Firstly, in game design and production, women are more in touch with their emotions and a key driver for gaming is to have emotionally believable characters. Secondly, in project management, women are more attuned to equity in working practices, especially work-life balance.
So why no just hire more women? EA would love to hire more women, Jeffery explained, but they simply aren’t applying for the jobs.
