Ubisoft Opens Second Studio in China

by Kiven on September 18th, 2007

French game publisher Ubisoft is opening a new studio in Chengdu, Sichuan, China and has appointed Ubisoft Shanghai senior producer Richard Tsao as its managing director. The company said Monday that the new studio will initially focus on internal outsourcing and will eventually develop online titles for PC, consoles and handhelds. Ubisoft’s Shanghai studio is the company’s second-largest development team, and the new studio in Chengdu will open in Tianfu Software Park with 10 team members, with the goal of growing to 200 developers over the next year.

“The success of our studio in Shanghai, which has been further confirmed with the launch of Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 for the PlayStation 3 system, has encouraged us to extend our growth in China,” said Christine Burgess-QuĂ©mard, executive director of worldwide studios at Ubisoft. “We are convinced that Chengdu offers the perfect environment for our expansion, offering a great number of highly educated and talented people.”

According to Ubisoft, Chengdu pumps out more than 35,000 software programming graduates per year. Tsao started his game development career at Microsoft and went to Ubi from Crytek, where he worked on Far Cry and Crysis, Ubisoft said in a news release Monday. Most recently, Tsao was responsible for the development of GRAW 2 for the PS3.
