Eve Online on Steam

by Kiven on January 23rd, 2008

Chalk another one for Valve’s Steam service as EVE Online, the space-faring massively multiplayer online game developed and published by Iceland-based CCP, is now available via the digital distribution service. The game is the first MMO to be offered on Steam, and the early downloaders will be treated to a 21-day trial period. The special offer also includes a $5 discount on the first month’s full subscription to EVE Online.

“Launching EVE on Steam means the addition of another fantastic PC game and the introduction of MMOs on Steam,” said Jason Holtman, director of business development at Valve. “The team at CCP continues to expand EVE’s universe and gameplay for the legions logging in to play each month, just as we continue to expand Steam’s consumer and developer features.”

Although dwarfed by MMO behemoths like World of Warcraft, which recently surpassed the 10 million subscriber mark, EVE has been going strong for almost five years in a unique single-server environment. CCP said the game currently has 220,000 subscribers.

“We are immensely excited and honored that EVE Online will be the first MMO on Steam,” said Magnus Bergsson, VP of Sales at CCP. “Steam has been the leading online distribution platform for a long time and home to some of the most dedicated gamers around, so we couldn’t think of a better fit for EVE Online.”
