Xbox 360 hits 5 Million in Europe

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 has hit the 5 million mark in Europe thereby putting it ahead of the PlayStation 3 by some three quarters of a million according to tub-thumping comments from Microsoft’s European VP of strategic marketing David Gosen.
Gosen, who made his name in a five year tenure at Nintendo that saw the launch of the GameCube, told trade website MCV, “Anyone trying to call a winner this Christmas is calling too early.”

In advance of this weekend’s Blizzard Worldwide Invitational in Paris, the frenzy of speculation around what the company’s “big announcement” would be has increased further with Blizzard’s VP of Design, Rob Pardo, hinting that it might be a brand new title.

EA and Maxis has announced a collect…err Galactic Edition for its upcoming life simulator Spore. While i am personally a big fan of extras packed inside a premium version of the game, i am a bigger fan of actual bonuses that enhances your gameplay such as additional parts, exclusive features or ingame bonuses that this package sadly lacks. I have no doubt that this will be gobbled up by excited consumers upon launch but i feel it is a missed opportunity of EA.

Polish developer CD Projekt Red Studio has announced that the Witcher Enhanced Edition is set for a September release. The PC RPG was originally scheduled for a May 16 release date in Europe, but the company decided to delay the edition to translate the game into 10 different languages for a worldwide release. Unfortunately, other than a “first half of September 2008″ release period, a specific date has not been announced.

The upcoming game Godfather II will add a layer of real time strategy to its open world gameplay, according to Electronic Art’s John Riccitiello’s comments to an investors meeting yesterday.
“You can play this game both at the street level, much like a GTA-style game, but you can also play it top-down, almost like you’re in an RTS, controlling the strategy of the boroughs so you can see what’s going on…” said Riccitiello of the follow up to EA’s movie adaptation which received a lukewarm response upon its release in 2006.

Nickolodeon expands its Games division

Nickelodeon is expanding its games portfolio via interests in the areas of virtual worlds/games and the formation of two separate divisions, the company announced today. The Nickelodeon Kids and Family Games Group includes all of its gaming initiatives, both paid and subscription, for online, PC, handheld and console, and will be led by senior VP and GM Dave Williams. It also includes Nickelodeon’s Addicting Games and Shockwave sites, for which the company recently promised 1,600 new casual games in 2008. The company will be seeking new game developer and publisher partnerships under this division.
