Microsoft’s Xbox 360 has hit the 5 million mark in Europe thereby putting it ahead of the PlayStation 3 by some three quarters of a million according to tub-thumping comments from Microsoft’s European VP of strategic marketing David Gosen.
Gosen, who made his name in a five year tenure at Nintendo that saw the launch of the GameCube, told trade website MCV, “Anyone trying to call a winner this Christmas is calling too early.”

Terminator coming back in 2009

Despite losing it’s iconic leading man to the upper echelons of US politics, the Terminator franchise moves on. With the first film in a proposed new trilogy hitting cinemas next year, work on the inevitable tie-in game has already begun.
Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins focuses on the exploits of now 30-year-old John Connor, and Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the film’s production company Halcyon will be dealing with the game’s development. Halcyon Co. have taken the bold step of setting up their own game studio to oversee production of the tie-in.

Ninja Gaiden 2 exclusive to Xbox 360

Looks like Ninja Gaiden 2 is coming to the Xbox 360 as an exclusive and published by Microsoft, no less.
During Microsoft’s pre-Tokyo Game Show press briefing, Team Ninja’s own Tomonobu Itagaki took center stage to announce Ninja Gaiden 2 and that it will be headed to the Xbox 360 exclusively in 2008. Itagaki then proceeded to do an on stage demo, showing off the game’s pretty dismemberment effects and began praising the 360 stating that it is “the best game console on the earth”.

Wii production boost delayed

Wii production boost delayed

Roughly nine months after Nintendo first released the Wii, the console is still regularly flying off shleves online and traditional brick and mortar shops. Back in May, Nintendo CEO and president Satoru Iwata apologized for the shortages, blaming them on production bottlenecks. Later that month, Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian told investors the company might not be able to address its supply problem until 2008. It looks like Nintendo’s push for more production of its successful console is being delayed due to availability of components.

Microsoft drops price of the Xbox 360

It’s a good time to “jump in” and buy an Xbox 360. Microsoft has just announced that it has officially dropped the price of the Xbox 360 by $50 U.S. dollars to coincide with the release of Madden NFL 08. Beginning August 8, 2007 the 360 “Premium” system will retail for $349.99 (down from $399.99) and will still come complete with a headset, controller and 20GB hard drive. The Xbox 360 core system, which is the system only, has dropped $20 itself — down to $279.99 from $299.99. In “special package land,” gamers with extra money to spend can pick …read more

Improved 360 CPU coming soon?

Improved 360 CPU coming soon?

The Singaporean semiconductor manufacturer that manufactured Xbox 360’s processor is reportedly developing an improved CPU, most likely as replacement for the current chips in Microsoft’s console.

Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing has said it will produce a 45-nanometer processor for use in videogame consoles within the next 18 months. The company previously made 90nm and 65nm versions of the 360 processor, and based on its track record it’s a good bet this latest chip is bound for Microsoft’s console as well.

eBay Says Average Cost of PS3 is $1K+

eBay Says Average Cost of PS3 is $1K+

People are working hard (or hardly working) to get their hands on the PS3. Folks are paying, on average, more than $1K to take home the shiny black console.
The Wii and XBox 360 are getting some love as well on eBay, but the PS3 is certainly the darling of the auction site at present. Who’d have thought that shorting your distribution outlets and making them appear much more popular than they really are would work for a console? Must have learned something from the 360’s release…

Gamers Spend 5 Hours Per Week Online

Gamers Spend 5 Hours Per Week Online

A new study by Nielson seems to suggest that gamers spend between 5-7 hours per week online playing games (Live! is included).
Even more interesting is the percentage clearly indicated that online gaming is the way of the future (duh):
Nielson found that, as of August, about 117 million people in the U.S. qualified as active gamers, and 56% reported playing games online as opposed to playing on consoles such as Sony PlayStation or with handheld devices.
And then this one that we already knew.
In the entire group, men outnumbered women by more than 2-to-1.
I spend roughly 5-10, depending on my week.  How …read more
